Almuñecar is a seaside town in the province of Granada, Spain. It is located on the “Costa Tropical”, in a subtropical microclimate, with a vast history. Fortifications were originally built in the 1st century B.C. by the Phoenicians and Romans (Sexi is the Phoenician & Roman name for Almuñécar), and during the Moorish occupation it became a huge fortress with 40 towers and 3 gates, named Sexi Hin al-Murecab, which means “fortress of the hill”. Although the Phoenician and Roman history of the district was known from Greek and Roman sources it was not until the 1950s that significant archaeological evidence was discovered. The castle, now known as Castillo de San Miguel, was declared a cultural monument in 1993.
